Skin care:
Most of us take our skin for granted. Very few of us
realize that skin is the body's first line of defense. It
keeps viruses, bacteria, germs, dust and pollutants from
entering our body. It also keeps us looking supple, and
feeling good.
Good skin care involves protecting your skin from sun, wind
and pollutants. It also requires keeping your skin healthy
through exercise, rest, and good nutrition. The skin, like
the rest of your body, needs nutrients like vitamins and
minerals to stay healthy. This can only happen if you take
a balanced and nutritious diet.
Regular intake of clean water is equally important for good
skincare. The water prevents dehydration, and keeps the
skin supple and fit. It also helps in removing toxins and
other waste from the body.
Skin care also involves protecting the body from the harmful
rays of the sun. Excessive exposure to ultraviolet
radiation can damage the skin. It can also lead to
wrinkles, premature aging, age spots, and cancer.
It is therefore essential to use a natural sunscreen or
moisturizer when lying in the sun for long periods of time.
The sunscreen forms a thin film over the body, and is a
good skincare tool.
Another requirement of skincare is to keep the skin supple.
The skin should not be allowed to become dry because dry
skins lead to itching sensations, and an individual is
likely to damage the skin by scratching it constantly.
There are three major causes of dry skin. These are:
frequent baths, use of harsh soaps and aging. Skincare
requires that individuals regulate their bathing time and
frequency, because water washes away all oil and moisture
from the skin surface. A good skincare solution is to take
a sponge bath with warm water. This cleans the skin,
without remove the valuable moisture.
Soaps are useful cleansing agents, but can be an enemy of
skincare when they have too many chemicals. It is therefore
advisable to use mild soaps. Also, rub good moisturizers
over the dry skin after the bath.
Two areas of the body where frequent use of moisturizers is
required are hands and face. You should, as a good
principle of skincare, apply moisturizer to the hands and
face several times a day.
A good skin care regimen should involve
the following three activities:
1. Cleanse: The skin must be cleaned every day to remove
dust, pollutants and perspiration that has settled on the
skin surface. Those individuals who have dry or sensitive
skin should use warm water to wash their skin. They can
also use a mild natural cleanser once a week. Those who
have a normal or oily skin should use a mild cleanser to
wash their skin every day.
2. Moisturize: Barring those individuals who have oily
skins, a moisturizer must be used every day as part of
skincare. This will protect the skin from indoor winter
heat and the harsh summer sun.
3. Protect: Natural sunscreen must be applied on all
exposed skin whenever an individual plans to spend
considerable time in the sun.
